Speed-Only Lag Putts

Leaving long putts short or blowing them 6 feet by.

START30 FT40 FT50 FTSPEED ONLY · NO HOLE · VARY THE DISTANCE EVERY PUTT
Overhead view · no hole, no line — vary the distance every putt and die it inside the circle

Set up

Putt to the fringe, not a hole, from 30–50 feet. The target is a 3-foot circle.

The reps

20 lag putts, varying the distance every putt. Only speed counts — finish inside the circle.

How you know it's working

16 of 20 finish inside a 3-foot circle around the target.

Why it works

Removing the hole removes line-obsession and trains the only thing that matters from distance: pace. Two-putting everything from 30+ feet deletes a whole category of dropped strokes.

The evidence

Shot Scope: the average 15-handicap takes ~34.8 putts per round, and the gap to better putters is almost entirely three-putt avoidance, not more one-putts. Varying distance every rep uses the contextual-interference effect — worse during practice, measurably better a week later on the course.
