Landing-Spot Chipping
Chunked and bladed greenside chips; poor up-and-down rate.
Set up
Drop a towel as a landing target 3 feet onto the green. Chip from just off the fringe.
The reps
Land 10 balls on the towel with one club, then switch clubs and repeat.
How you know it's working
7 of 10 land on the towel. Where it lands matters more than where it ends up — at first.
Why it works
A chip is a throw: pick the landing spot, let the club do the rest. The towel converts a vague 'get it close' into a precise, external target your brain can actually calibrate to.
The evidence
Shot Scope: 15-handicaps convert only ~25% of up-and-downs — moving toward 40% is worth 1–2 strokes most rounds. Focusing on the landing spot is a textbook external focus of attention, which multi-day studies show outperforms technique-focused (internal) instruction for both learning and pressure performance.
