The Up-and-Down Circuit
A short game that practices pretty but doesn't convert on the course.
Set up
Pick 9 spots around one green — different lies, distances, and trouble. One ball, chip then putt out every time.
The reps
Play all 9. An up-and-down scores 1 point; three shots scores 0. Log your score.
How you know it's working
4 of 9 converted — that's a 44% rate, well above the 25% mid-handicap average.
Why it works
Chipping practice without the putt is half a skill. The circuit trains the full save — including the 6-footer with something riding on it.
The evidence
Shot Scope benchmarks: 15-handicaps get up and down ~25% of the time; single-digit players roughly double that. Every 3 extra conversions per round is 3 strokes. The one-ball, varied-lie format is random practice with consequences — the schedule that transfers.
